 John Hutchins

 

John Hutchins worked professionally as a librarian in a number of UK universities. He is now retired. He is the author of books and articles on linguistics and information retrieval, and since 1978 he has concentrated particularly on machine translation, with surveys and historical works (e.g. Machine translation: past, present, future, 1986; Introduction to machine translation [with Harold Somers], 1992) and as editor of MT News International (1991-1997).

He has been active in the European Association for Machine Translation (president since 1995) and the International Association for Machine Translation (president: 1999-2001).

He is currently editing a book of reminiscences and memoirs by and about pioneers of machine translation during the 1950s and 1960s.
